Hi,
What a surprise. This is a real page turner! I thought I would take a week reading it but couldn't put it down until I reached the last period on the last page. It also sounds authentic because in the 20's and 30's of the last century there were many Jewish boxing champions - and even wrestling greats. The Canadian - the Hebrew Hercules - who recently passed away was just one of the latter.
This is a saga made for the screen.

Fate trumps Will.
I'll put my money down on this novel being an allegory of the bible. Hey, it begins with the covenant between God and Abraham (Avrum). And I could fix most of the characters with biblical figures or communities.
It's a powerful novel as it stands, although my wife was a bit upset by the graphic rape of Fanny toward the end. Avrum's first experience with that bedraggled prostitute in Montreal was as hilarious as it was sad.
